A Career in Agriculture

A career in agriculture covers many fields from working as an agricultural engineer through to farm work. At present there is a shortage of people training and working in the agricultural industry and the UK is crying out to people of all ages to get behind the UK’s agricultural industry.

Agriculturalists
Demands within the farming and agricultural industry have risen so highly that most people entering into a field usually have some form of higher education training. For example, agriculturalists, who specialise in producing food and the growth of foods, have usually trained in a BSc and ideally in a BSc in Agriculture. Careers as an agriculturalist could include Plant Nutrition, Animal and Food science, Wildlife Management etc.

Agricultural Engineers
As with all engineers, agriculture engineers are trained to degree level. Agricultural engineers use their engineering and knowledge to provide solutions within agriculture. This field of engineering usually requires a field of specialisation which may include soil conservation, agricultural mechanics etc.

Working On A Farm
Working on a farm is perhaps one of the first images that pops up when you think about a career in agriculture. Farmer and Farm Foremen of course plan and run all the day-to-day activities on a farm. Usually there is no formal training for this and it is something that you learn on a job. If you are interested in seeing what is like to work on a farm why not ask your local farm to see if they need any help. You could work in your summer holidays or at the weekends as a farm hand. Working as a farmer is not just a job it is a lifestyle and takes considerable commitment. Therefore, working as a farm-hand or at your local stable at least will give you some idea of the work demands a farm can make.
