Thinking of applying to a BEd course?

Thinking of applying to a BEd course? Don’t know what to do next? Here are the top 5 tips to remember when applying to your course. As the Scouts say, be prepared!

  • BEd Soul-Searching – Teaching is a vocation so it is important to know exactly why you want to pursue that career as this will get you through those tough days when you are teaching. Probably the most important question you will be asked is why you want to teach so make sure you can articulate your motivations with enthusiasm and sincerity.
  • BEd Work Experience – A successful application will show signs that you have taken the time to experience what the work of a teacher is like.  Write a letter or phone your local schools to ask if you can spend some time there, explain that you are interested in becoming a teacher and want to know more. Make sure you dress appropriately and take note of good teaching practice, you may use it in the future.
  • BEd Getting Involved – If you want to become a teacher, you are obviously interested in and care about young people. If you want to go into secondary school teaching then perhaps you could help out with a local youth group or service that benefits young people. If you want to teach at primary level then get involved with your local primary school.
  • BEd Taking An Interest -  In your degree you will learn a lot about education through history and current initiatives to enhance learning in schools. Keep up-to-date with what’s going on in education today and teaching issues by reading the TES (Times Educational Supplement) or visit: http://www.tes.co.uk/
  • BEd Research – think ahead about where you might like to teach and live. You will be spending a lot of time in the local schools around your university so make sure that you research the area.
