The experience really opened my eyes. There was just so much to see out there and I came back really inspired musically.
After studying economics at UCL, Radhika was ready to start her career as an investment banker. However, before accepting her first job, she decided to undertake a backpacking trek around South America. “The experience really opened my eyes. There was just so much to see out there and I came back really inspired musically. It made me realise that I just didn’t want to follow the process of uni to job, marriage to mortgage!”
Radhika excelled at both piano and violin before she reached her teens, but it is her deliciously distinctive vocals that catapulted her into the limelight. In 2002 she was awarded the Most Outstanding Artist at the Urban Voice Contest. Since, she has performed in front of 5,000 people in Trafalgar Square and hosted residencies at venues in and around London.
Radhika’s first foray into opening up her music to the world began when her self-penned song entitled ‘Cold Out Here’, began making waves online. She had recorded a rough acoustic version and tentatively decided to put it on the internet (music.download.com) to see what reaction it received. The accolades were tremendous and it was downloaded well over 10,000 times with no publicity or radio play. This incredible attention spurred interest in her and she was invited to appear on BBC 2’s Desi DNA show and performed an acoustic version of the track live on air. Radhika’s songs have now been downloaded over 30,000 times.
