Kent Police - Special Constables and police staff volunteers

Help make your community a safer place…

Kent Police is recruiting now for both Special Constables and police staff volunteers in Mid Kent. Work for just 16 hours a month as a Special Constable and make a real difference to your community. Learn some valuable new skills working alongside regular police officers. As a police staff volunteer you will contribute to the improvement of support services such as traffic management or the Criminal Justice Unit.

Meet Special Constable Missy Tsim

‘I’ve been a Special for about the past two-and-a-half years. I’m a volunteer and give up around 30 hours a month. I’ve a law degree, so I guess I wanted to find out what the practical side of policing was like. ‘I have a day job so my shifts are mainly in the evenings and at weekends. I’m trained as a regular police officer and my work is mainly reactive following calls from members of the public. Weekends are the busiest period for reports of rowdiness in the high streets at night and I work alongside police officers and police community support officers. ‘During the day I might be helping to carry out road checks and issuing speeding tickets. I’m often involved in the local fairs and tend to work a lot with the young people, moving on nuisance groups or seizing alcohol.’

Support your police force…

John Springall has been a police staff volunteer at Sittingbourne Police Station for eight months. He works five days a week and no day is ever the same: ‘I could be given the responsibility of delivering internal mail one day and then be asked to take patrol cars to be serviced the next. I like to be kept busy and it keeps my mind fresh. When I retired I decided I didn’t want to sit at home and being a police staff volunteer fits in with my life perfectly.’
