Deansgate & Deansgate Locks

With the architecturally bold ‘1 Deansgate’ apartment building puncturing the skyline, you can’t miss the start   of Deansgate. This busy shopping district offers cuisine from around the world, traditional pubs like The Ox and exclusive drinking establishments like Restaurant, Bar and Grill and Panacea, where the reformed Take That held their after-show party. It’s a great area for spotting famous footballers and soap stars too. Deansgate Locks has reinvented its industrial past with its once-redundant railway arches and now houses contemporary bars like Loaf, which boasts cool DJs on Fridays and Saturdays. Or head for the Comedy Store.

Castlefield and the Gay Village
Castlefield, on the city’s west side, is Britain’s first urban heritage park. The bars and restaurants that have built up around the Bridgewater Canal - like the glass-fronted Albert’s Shed - offer a stylish tribute to James Brindley’s 19th-century engineering feat. The world-renowned Gay Village is loud and proud of its flamboyant reputation. Centred around Canal Street, you’ll find exuberance at Queer or Taurus, and refinement at Velvet or AXM, and well into the wee hours.

International Sporting Facilities In Manchester

Well you will be pleased to know that when England or Britain sends out an international sports team, you can bet at least one of its members will be from Manchester. Why not take advantage of the Aquatics Centre Built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games boasting two 50m swimming pools, diving facilities, a fitness studio and a health suite. Pools and sessions are segregated for swimmers of differing abilities and intentions, so you need not fear being steamrollered by an Olympic hopeful.

Cyclists can enjoy one of the world’s fastest indoor tracks at the Manchester Velodrome, which caters for beginners’ right through to the professionals. It also boasts facilities for basketball, badminton and netball.

If you prefer the great outdoors then you are in luck! Manchester is nestled among some of England’s finest scenery; casual walkers, serious hikers and those with a penchant for running up mountains can all do their thing in spectacular surroundings. To the south-east is the Peak District, which incorporates 555 square miles of National Park - a natural hinterland for urban dwellers. The Lake District, to the north, contains England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike at 978 metres, and the picturesque environment provides a dramatic showcase and ample opportunity for sporting activity or leisurely sightseeing.
