If you thought puppets were for kids then think again. Avenue Q is a definite must see for anyone suffering from graduate blues.
Set in downtown New York, Avenue Q may not be the most desirable of locations but its residents certainly make it the most fun. This mischievous, and often at times dark musical, is a hilarious take on life after university. We follow Princeton, an aptly named English graduate, through his journey into adulthood hoping to find his sense of purpose. However, life has a habit of getting in the way for Princeton as he falls in love with Avenue Q resident Kate Monster. Throw into the mix a few other life distractions, such as local singer Lucy The Slut and some Bad Idea Bears and we are reminded that perhaps these distractions are indeed our life.
In true Muppet style their ability to release your inner child adds to the hilarity of the dark lyrics and of course, nothing is funnier than naughty puppets - no matter how old you are!”
The storyline of Avenue Q is extremely simple and the child-like score comments on the ironies of modern life with chirpy songs such as “Everybody’s A Little Bit
Racist” and “The Internet Is For Porn”. However, it is the crazy magic of puppets that brings Avenue Q to life. In true Muppet style their ability to release your inner child adds to the hilarity of the dark lyrics and of course, nothing is more funnier than naughty puppets - no matter how old you are!
So, if you had ever wished that there was a Sesame Street for adults then you’re in luck! Culture snobs and those born into adulthood might as well stay at home ‘cos this comical affair is quite seriously great fun. A definite “must see” for 2009!
