THEATRE REVIEW

Spamalot

Sanjeev Bhaskar
Palace Theatre, London
0870 145 1177

To give a serious critique of Spamalot would simply be missing the point. For this is a production that ridicules all things that are taken too seriously. Besides, why would you want to! The Monty Python musical is a cracking adaptation of the film “Monty Python and The Holy”, aptly named laughalot by its former critics.

Always game for a laugh, Sanjeev Bhaskar currently stars in the lead role as King Arthur, His Asian” init” anecdotes offer a unique and hilarious edge to the character and, whilst he may not win X factor with his vocal abilities, he manages to hold the tunes and act as a strong lead amidst the mayhem of tap dancing knights and killer rabbits!

SpamalotBhaskar is ably supported by high energy ensembles that are clearly having a great time. Sharp performances also come from his loyal sidekick, Patsy, brilliantly played by Andrew Spillet. Spillet happily skips his imaginary horse around the stage with Bhaskar offering some killer comic timing and a twitch that would make Lee Evans proud! Nina Soderquist, The Lady Of The Lake, also deserves a mention. Her West End Diva strops and impressive vocal range add a touch of glamour in true camp musical style. Add in the mix a gay disco outing of Jake Nightingales Sir Lancelot, flying French cows and a sea of scantily clad dancing girls, thrown on stage at any given opportunity, and you finally begin to understand why you should seriously look on the bright side of life!
